Footy Fan Wins Two Huge ACCAs in Two Years
Mick Gibbs was a hardworking roofer and an avid football fan. Like many of us who love the beautiful game, he placed the odd wager on his favorite teams, and there’s no wager more exciting to a football fan than an ACCA.
For those of you who don’t bet on sports, ACCA is a slang term for accumulator. Winning an ACCA bet requires you to win multiple bets, anything from three to 20 or more bets on one slip. If one of them fails, the ACCA doesn’t pay. The more teams you bet on, the more you can win.
Mick Gibbs won his first ACCA in 1999. He bet £2.50 on an ACCA with nine games on the slip. He won a cool £157,000. That’s a lot of money today. Back then, it was life-altering.
Like many sports bettors, Gibbs didn’t stop when he won. He kept betting on football, and it’s lucky he did. Two years later, he bet a minuscule £0.30 on a 15-game ACCA, winning himself a £500,000 payout.
That’s a total of £657,000 in wins for £2.80 worth of risk. Amazing!
British Couple Wins £1m in the Lottery Twice
I can tell you right now that if I won the National Lottery, I’d never play it again. Even if I won a few hundred grand, I don’t think I’d ever purchase another ticket. One lucky football punter, who decided to remain anonymous, used Betfair’s cash-out feature to settle a £1 accumulator bet for £223,000. If he (or she) had waited four minutes more, it would have been worth nothing. Despite being tempted to hold on for £1.2 million, he made the decision to pull the plug in what is surely one of the best sports betting decisions of all time.
The mystery bettor placed a £1 wager on a 21-team ACCA on Boxing Day 2016. This was the day Arsenal defeated West Brom with a late goal, putting the punter ahead 19 out of the 21 games he’d selected.
Rather than wait for the final two games to play out for a shot at £1.2 million, the wise bettor decided to call it a day and took the option to cash out despite at least one of his other games being ahead late in the game.
It was a smart move, too, because four minutes later, Wycombe scored an equaliser against Plymouth Argyle, which would have left the bettor empty-handed.
Would I have cashed out when I knew one of my other teams was ahead? I’m not sure, but many bettors have strong gut feelings, and clearly, this one felt something telling him to quit while he was ahead.

Newcastle FC Boss Wins £1.3m on a Single Roulette Spin
The old saying, “it takes money to make money” is certainly true in business. And in this case, it was true for gambling, too.
Back in 2008, Newcastle United boss and business tycoon Mike Ashley stunned onlookers at a Mayfair Casino when he won £1.3 million on a single spin of the roulette wheel. He’d wagered £480,000 on a series of bets known as the complete.
This wager involved him betting on all combinations involving the number 17, the number 17 itself, betting on odd numbers, betting on black, and betting that it would land on a number between 1 and 18.
After the ball landed in the 17 pocket, the already filthy-rich businessman smiled and said, “That’ll do me,” before the crowd erupted in applause and cheering.
It’s not a realistic possibility for most of us, but hey, even high rollers need a little luck in the casino.
